A Polar Year
94min. Directed by Samuel Collardey.
Starring Anders Hvidegaard, Asser Boassen, Thomasine Jonathansen
Anders, a novice teacher, leaves his native Denmark for a teaching position in rural Greenland. As soon as he arrives in the remote coastal village of Tiniteqilaaq, he finds himself at odds with tightly-knit indigenous Inuit locals. Only through a clumsy and playful trial of errors can Anders shake his Euro-centric assumptions and connect with the school children in a meaningful way. French filmmaker Samuel Collardey’s documentary displays striking images of the beautiful snow-covered Greenland landscape, as well as intimate scenes of everyday life in the small village.
Presented as part of the VFF at Violet Crown film series in partnership with Virginia Film Festival.
